Doing the right thing... which is??

Sometimes it's so hard to do the right thing, because you don't know which is the right thing. So am I supposed to do this, or do that? Is doing something a demonstration of faith & confidence, or faithlessness & self-reliance? Or am I supposed to not do anything, but is that faithful or not acting in faith?
